In two-year programs offered at fashion design vocational schools, the fundamentals of fashion design are taught. Students may earn certificates or an Associate of Arts Degree at fashion design vocational schools.
Some industry leaders believe that vocational training schools provide even better preparation and training than four-year institutions because they are more closely linked with the garment industry. Mostly, a vocational school will have a two-tiered certificate program, which goes along with an Associate of Arts degree.
For those individuals who want a quick access to the field, usually a first-level certificate of proficiency is offered. Individuals with this certificate will be prepared to work as Design Room Assistants. A busy design room is a hub of exciting activities and jobs.
Applicants for the position have a greater chance for Assistant Designer positions if they earn a 2nd level Certificate of Proficiency. An assistant designer will usually be responsible for providing a rough copy of flat sketches of garments with details to allow for production. It helps to learn fabric features and construction tips as well as how to order both fabrics and trims. As they will be asked to perform various functions in the design room, designers have to be adaptable and organized.
