Playing poker can in some ways be likened to playing the stock market. Just as investors calculate probabilities about a stock’s value based on past history and future expectation, casino poker players evaluate their hands according to its strength plus what they know about the other players’ past actions.
Every poker hand carries some risk. This is a fact that many players conveniently forget when they turn over monster pocket cards like Aces or Kings when playing poker online. Just like a greedy investor, they begin fantasizing about how much money they will win and forget that anything can happen at the poker table just as in the stock market.
Aces may be the best starting hand in Texas Hold ‘Em, but even Aces get cracked about 20 percent of the time. Nothing is a sure thing in poker. When deciding how to play your hand, you must consider how strong the risk factor is for beating your hand. Pre-flop, you’re sitting on the winner’s throne with pocket Aces, but a flop that brings three to a suit or pairs the board puts your Aces in jeopardy. The risk of them being beat is much higher at this point, and it’s not likely you’ll chase away anyone who has connected with that flop.
When you are dealt a big hand, play it big right away to minimize your risk. You don’t want everyone to fold - you only go up against one or two other players. The more players you’re up against, the higher the risk to your hand, no matter how big a monster it seems to be pre-flop.
