Top Female Squash Players to Participate in Karachi Open

The inaugural Rockrete Karachi Women Open Squash Championship 2009 gets underway this week at the Karachi Club in Pakistan. Top female squash players from all over the country are expected to participate in this cash-rich tournament. Former national champions Irum Jehan and Bushra Haider are expected to be hitting squash balls with their opponents during the competitions.

Both Haider and Jehan had to go through the qualifying rounds in order to make it to the main draw. The two players are in a comeback trail and managed to get through other younger aspiring players aiming for glory in this Rs70,000 tournament which ends on October 21, 2009.

Exciting matches are at stake in this tournament, considering that it is a great mix of aspiring players and current champions.
Pakistan’s number one female squash player Maria Toor is the strong favorite to clinch the inaugural title. The young player from Peshawar is currently the highest ranked Pakistani female squash player in the world at 91.

Other strong title contenders include Muqaddas Ashraf, Rushna Mehboob, Saima Shoukat, Habiba Khan, Riffat Khan and Aliya Sarfaraz.

The grand winner will win Rs 13,300 while the runner-up will receive Rs 9,100.

The Karachi Squash Association is the official organizer of this tournament.

The press conference for this exciting tournament took place last Saturday at the Karachi Club. Rockcrete Chief Executive Shariq Vohra was present to give assurance of his company’s commitment in supporting the game of squash by sponsoring this tournament.
